What is the Qipao ? This Chinese women's clothing of Manchu origin, 滿族, became a real fashion statement in the early 20th century in Shanghai. Let's discover the history of traditional Chinese dresses together.

Qipao, from qi and pao, long and loose dress, represented the costume exclusively for Manchu women. Originally, this traditional dress did not reveal the body shape. It covered the knees and was adapted to any type of silhouette.

The shape of the Qipao that we all know more or less, close to the body, was born in the early 20th century in Shanghai. It was easily combined with western cut jackets, coats and sweaters. In 1912, it became a symbol of luxury, modernity and dynamism. The Qipao experienced a boom in the 1920s to 1930s where it rapidly expanded from the wealthy classes to the social classes, being increasingly worn by female students.
